A Leading Woman is One Worth Following

In today’s society there is far too much competition between us women. Wherever you look there’s some sort of competition between us; competition to look the youngest, be the thinnest/ healthiest, be the most successful, the list can go on indefinitely. With all this negativity I feel it’s important that we look for the good and stick together. As such, I’ve decided to start a weekly segment, “Woman Crush Wednesday”. In these posts I will write about a woman or group of women I find inspiring. These may be women from the past or present but are all women whom I admire for one reason or another.

I figured I’d start the segment with something a little different. I just finished reading an absolutely brilliant book: “Leading Women: 20 Influential Women Share Their Secrets to Success, Business, and Life” by Nancy D. O’Reilly, PSYD.

First, this book is so great because of how reader friendly it is. The Book is broken up into three sections, all dealing with a different broad aspect of our lives. The first section of the book is called “Part One: Mastering Our External Environment”. This section of the book includes essays that deal with essential qualities and skills women should develop/ possess to help them create a better world for themselves and others. The second section of the book is called “Part Two: Mastering Our Internal Environment”. This section of the book is really about teaching us to get out of our own way. This section of the book helps us to recognize barriers within ourselves that limit how productive we can be. These essays also help us to connect who we see ourselves to be and where we fit in the world. Finally, the final section of the book is “Part Three: Connecting to Support Each Other”. This section includes a group of essays that deal with how, in order to be truly successful, all women must support each other in all aspects of life.

Another reason this is such a useful book comes from the variety of its contributors. There is such a range in professions of its contributors that it ensures the lessons given come from many differing points of view. Even with all these differing points of view there is an overarching theme across all essays; that women are powerful beings and are fully capable of unlocking this power and using it in their own lives.

To me this book is more than simply about gaining the tools needed to achieve success. To me, this book speaks of sisterhood. This book gives us the tools needed to achieve our success, and the inspiration we need to push through our obstacles and persevere until we meet our goals. If I’ve learned anything during this healthy lifestyle journey, it’s that it is key to use all resources at your disposal to achieve your success. This book gives us a huge leg up with a plethora of resources from subject matter experts who want us to succeed. It is our duty to take this advice and information, use it to better ourselves and the world around us; and in time, pass on what we’ve learned to others. As we all know, when we come together, that’s when we can really show our girl power.
